Troy, Michigan 1989-1992
This school for 1.800 students in the expanding Detroit suburb of Trny responds to its siti; rather than to regional architectural characteristics, weaving together interior and exterior spaces. Similar intentions informed the Crow Island School in VVinnetka, Illinois, designed in 1939 by Perkins & Will and Bliel and Eero Saarinen, as well as the nearby Cranbrook Academy of Art in Uloomfield Hills, designed by Eliel Saarinen between 1925 and 1943. But Troy High School also continues the school-as-village theme of earlier projects.
Here parallel classroom bars connected by a central circulation spine sit at right angles to ii stand of trees at the southwest corner of the site. The resulting spaces are a series of outdoor rooms that become integral parts of the interior environment of the school. The bars act as a ground or datum that contrasts with the sculptural, pavilion-like forms of the school‘s shared facilities: the library, cafeteria, auditorium. gymnasium, and pool. The theater and gymnasium are located at the periphery to allow for separate community access. An exit stair transformed into a symbolic tower marks the main entrance and terminates the lobby end of the spine.
