学校历史
1800年1月18日，时任的美国副总统托马斯·杰斐逊在写给Joseph Priestley的一封信中提起建立一所新大学的计划；
1802年，时任美国总统的托马斯·杰斐逊在写给艺术家Charles Willson Peale的信中提及，“新的学校应建立在尽可能自由和宽松的环境下。”
1788年，美国第五任总统詹姆斯·门罗购买了弗吉尼亚大学所处的土地；
1817年，这片紧邻夏洛特维尔的农场在当时被称为中央学院的学校筹建委员会买下，而此时詹姆斯·门罗恰好开始了他作为美国总统的第一个任期；
1817年，在托马斯·杰斐逊的主持下，举行了学校奠基仪式，并于1819年获得了弗吉尼亚州政府的大学办学许可证；
1825年3月7日，学校正式授课；
1836年，工程与应用科学学院开启，标志着全美首个工程学院的成立；
1904年，弗吉尼亚大学的第一任校长同时也是杜兰大学的前任校长Edwin Alderman对学校以及该州的公立大学教育体系做了一系列的改革。
学生宿舍
弗吉尼亚大学建立最早的宿舍楼即麦考密克路宿舍（the McCormick Road Dormitories）通常被称为“旧宿舍”。此宿舍楼成立于二战之后，虽然没有现代化的建筑和设施，但靠近中央广场，房间宽敞明亮。另外一个宿舍楼是阿尔德曼路宿舍楼，虽然该宿舍楼创建于1960年，具有特色套房式居住风格，但通常被称为新宿舍楼。。2013年8月，学校拆除了原有的11座建筑在原有的基础上新盖了5座大宿舍楼。

ME与MAS：也即工程硕士（Masters of Engineering，缩写ME）与应用科学硕士（Masters of Applied Science，缩写MAS）同是一种学制1年的专业硕士学位，一般需修30个学分，无需撰写毕业论文。这两个项目主要面向就业，读完不能直接申请PhD，此类学位项目无奖学金。
