西北大学（Northwestern University, NU或NWU) 创建于1851年，是一所私立研究型大学，由John Evans*并其他8名律师、商人及卫理公会领导人联合创办。1855年正式授课，1869年开始招收女子学生。如今，西北大学本科生人数共9,914人，研究生人数也达到10,645人。西北大学是全国大学体育协会十大联盟高校（Big Ten Conference）的创会成员，且一直是其中唯一的私立大学。西北大学与国内诸多高校都有合作，如：西北大学与清华大学；西北大学医学院与首都医科大学；西北大学商学院与香港理工大学共同合办的MBA项目等。

西北大学艺术硕士学位-编剧（Masters of Fine Arts in Writing for the Screen and Stage, MFA）是两年制的学位项目，要求申请者拥有正规大学学士学位。
申请材料与艺术硕士学位-纪录片大致相似，以下三点为不同之处：
1 writing sample：10页，电影或电视剧本，勿写散文；
2 希望在该就读该专业时参与什么样的写作项目，一页题纲；
3 评论性ESSAY，两个选题中选一*
费用与奖学金
两学年期间有$5000支持论文项目；纽约、洛杉矶、芝加哥的实习机会；第一学年，以奖/助学金的形式减免$5400学费；第二学年至少有一学期的助教和助理研究员的机会。
注：
Essay的选题为：
(1) Based on your experience, to what extent do most films, plays and/or television shows argue for the power of free will? To what extent do they argue for the power of fate? Give specific examples to back up your argument. (500 words or less).
(2) Compare two films, television shows, or plays that
A: have similar plots and B: that are personally meaningful to you but were created at least 20 years apart. (You may use any combination for comparison; two films, one play and one film, one film and one television show, etc.). Describe the personal meaning each work has for you and how it provides insight into the values of society at the time. (500 words or less).
